Title: Improve the Site- What Is Most Pressing?
Post by: Kloud on January 11, 2011, 10:54:35 pm
See the title. What do you guys think are the most pressing things I can do for forum improvement? I'd like suggestions, so I can fix the place up a little. New staff (what type)? New banner? New boards, or rearranging boards? Etc?

I'll be buying things to spruce the forum up in Februrary/March-ish, so please keep that in mind when suggesting things to me. While suggesting things like that is okay, I'd love to hear about things I could improve for free, as well.

I've been feeling like I should update this place, so I want your input.

Me as Admiral Awesome. Just a suggestion. Take it if you want it.

But seriously, right now just focus on membership. A proper domain would help. Affiliates with other sites. And those damn ads...

But seriously, right now just focus on membership. A proper domain would help. Affiliates with other sites. And those damn ads...

1. Get Opera 11.
2. Right-click.
3. Click on Block content.
4. Click the ads.
...
5. PROFIT!

I want speed.
L-com is slow. And when we post something, it takes time before it appears on the home/latest posts.
Aside from that, I don't really care. XD

Title: Re: Improve the Site- What Is Most Pressing?
Post by: Kloud on January 11, 2011, 11:05:19 pm
Yup! No matter what, I will be buying a domain name and removing ads. If this place gets to be busy, I'll look into improving speed. I've heard there are ways that you can export the forum off of smfforfree, which would probably make things faster. I'll need Wes to help me with this stuff, as I'm fairly incompetent when it comes to that. xD

But I do agree, membership is a key issue. Affiliations would also be nice... I'll look into that.

I am too recent to know what needs to be improved, but I noticed that in the Tabs bar of my browser Ludicom has a blank Icon.
Nothing really important, but it caught my eye right away :P.

Sincerely,

Would you mind PMing me a screenshot so I can see exactly what we're dealing with? I'm not having any issues, but if it's an issue on my end, I'd love to fix it for you. :D

A quick reply box maybe. So we don't have to press the reply button and go to a whole new screen for short replies.

Rosim's talking about the favicon.
I could do a favicon but I don't know how you place it in smfforfree.
I know how to do it when making an HTML website but forums are different since they're just based on something or whatever.

A quick reply box maybe. So we don't have to press the reply button and go to a whole new screen for short replies.

There's one. You have to activate it in your settings.

This is optional, I think. I just went in the Look options, and I think it was there.

And I will post the screenshot in a moment.

Correct. You can activate it under the Look and Layout section in your Profile menu. I made it optional so that people can customize based on their preferences.

Mmk. I'm sure Mag knows what he's talking about xP

currency?
Already discussed. Can't be added without me buying the permission to do so (sucks, I know).

It's a better use of my money to move the forum elsewhere, then just add it in ourselves. Hit two birds with one stone, yeah? :) If this place stays afloat after I add in the domain name and the ad free stuff, I'll continue to update it if it seems to be looking okay. I'll have to put a price limit on how much I want to put into L-com, though. If it stays tiny like this, I probably won't put too much in at first, and just add as it grows.

I wonder if anything I just said makes sense xD

My own forum Spiriteam is free and it allows currency, so it can be done without buying.

Smfforfree, Aryeh. It sucks. I can't help that I used this when I created L-com ^^;

Since smfforfree already has smf on it, I don't know if I can install smf again and add the mod in or not. Again, I'm not much good at the technical stuff. I'd assume not, since I have looked into it and smfforfree makes you pay, by the looks of it.

I want to add currency in, but so far, it hasn't been able to be implemented.

You could  buy decent hosting for bit lot less then this.
And then you could do everything in that and more.

The hosting plan I'm looking into for my website is like 5$/year. :O
Seriously, 300/year is REALLY expensive.

Yeah. But you need to do everything from A to Z.
I can only do as much as a layout with links and put it online.
I can do more with Flash but a Flash forums is just due to fail. XD
Plus, I haven't even started working on MY site so don't expect me working on someone else's before actually doing mine.
I'm just SO lazy.

I've been considering that, as I do know that you're busy with a life too. I think one more would be just right. :)

If you have any people in particular in mind that you wouldn't mind working with, please PM me who or we can chat over Staff. :3

I changed it quite some time ago... To give you a time frame, it was back when Sakashi was making lots of banners still (it's his work ^^).

I have no idea- I merely gave him the concept for the character and color scheme. We'd have to ask him to know for sure if it's attacking or just dancing around, LOL.

We were getting a number of spambots signing up. By doing this, I can stop obvious spambots from ever posting, which averts many potential spam issues (such as pornographic image dumps, advertising for illegal medications, etc). It cuts down on work for the staff and also keeps this place looking clean and safe. It also keeps our active member to total account ratio pretty high, when compared to forums who's memberlist consists mostly of completely innactive or spambot accounts. While this isn't the most convenient thing, I believe the benefits offered are well worth it. I check for new members twice daily, so you shouldn't wait too long to be approved or denied. :)

Thank you all for your understanding  :D

Also, with Ludicom's 1 year anniversary coming up soon, I will be having a few things going on, but not as many as I'd like due to school. Once I find a time when things slow down, I will have a huge topic full of celebration, even if it is late. In the works are new features (already added one- Invite Friends), a staff position, and a contest with a tangible prize to be sent to the winner! So stay tuned~

I'm not sure if this has been suggested already, but maybe a way to buy titles from the shop (If or when you make one).  There was another SMF Forum I was on a while ago that had an option to do it, each title adds a special mini banner under your avatar :D

It would cost me an obscene amount of money to create currency and a shop on the forum as is... I might do it, later on, if the forum lasts until I have a regular income. I plan to move the forum to it's own place instead of this free one, and to add in stuff then, should it be about. But that is a good idea.

I might offer custom ranks (with custom stars/icons, as well) as prizes for contests held here. This could be a suitable similar option until I have the ability to offer you all a shop. Thoughts? :D

I'm incredibly busy at this time in my life (and I will be, until the semester is over... And even then, I'll still be busy, just less so), so I will need to either have things wait until later or to give others the jobs (AKA my faithful members, AKA you guys :)).

Sorry to not be able to be as active, but I need to worry about my future first, you know? I'll still be on, I just don't have as much time to fix this place up. There are some days I haven't had time for adequate sleep or time to eat proper meals, so please bear with me. xP

I'm not terribly close with Smogon.... I don't really want this place to become a battler's hub, as it is meant to be a social and creative community (I may be misinformed about Smogon, the only experience I have with the members was when someone on PPN pissed them off and they came after me since I was Trade Mod at the time, LOL). So someone else, who's better informed about their community, would have to create that bridge. I'd really hate to walk into their home territory and make an assumption that'd mess relations between our forums up. xD;;

Videos/newspaper is a decent idea, but we'd need some devoted members to help out with them (see above as for why- busy).

I don't know what "clans" are, so I'd like more info before I say any more. ^^

Clans like teams battling teams or websites.

I didn't want to name names.

Again, this wasn't built to be a nothing-but-battling site, so as long as it doesn't overtake the forum or something (very unlikely, but I'll mention it anyways), I'd probably be cool with it. ^^ You can feel free to assemble teams and the like, I have no problem with that! :)

Join with Smogon Join with Smogon....

or how about a way to get more members on this site.

More team videos, our own news paper or even clan wars....

Since you're more affiliated with smogon, why don;t you try and get Ludicom's word out? Remember Ludicom is a socially based Pokemon forum, yes members interact here through trading and battling, but there are a lot of other creative works and discussions here for members to take part of, that's sort of Ludicom's niche. It would be great to get more experienced new members involved in the community, unlike what's happening on PPN now xD

In terms of clans, if we get enough battlers here then this could be a great idea, so far I'd say we have 5-10 battlers here.

A chatbox on the main page would be nice.
The trades could be arranged in topics while the whole "I got dc'ed, I don't see you, let's reco, etc" could go in the chat. XD

if you able to edit the things at the top (HOME, HELP, SEARCH, etc) like smf tends to do, you might be able to add Chatbox to link to a xatbox to something :P

This has been suggested before, I've looked into ways to do it, but no success yet. However, in the mean time, you can go onto the Spam board and click "Mark Read" (it's near the new topic option) to mark all topics on that board read. This works for any board that gets posted in a lot that you don't wanna read about xP

Yep, I never disabled them, it's just that I forgot to enable to for the Blessed group (it's off by default). It should be fixed now, though. :) Let me know if everything looks as it should.

Only two or three things. There are hundreds of settings boxes I have to set for each membergroup when I make them, so it's not exactly easy to be perfect. I'm not surprised I missed a few tbh xD

Going through all groups will take me a long time, so I will do it when I have time. Right now, I'm preparing to give a speech for class. xP I'll sift through them eventually.

Also, on that note, about a week ago I checked your Mod status on the child boards to the RP board and you were already modded for them (meaning that you should have been able to Mod them for months now). If you could quick check and let me know if you can, I'd appreciate it.

There's also an invite friends feature for popular social networking sites. :) There's also a button set that you can use to support us on any sites allowing you a signature or place to put such things. I will make up a topic tonight with ways you can support Lcom :3

In the meantime, I'm currently discussing the applicants for Ume's assistant with Ume herself, and I hope to have someone selected by Sunday. Having another person to help with basic duties should free me up for more admin time (as of now, I do moddy things as well as adminy ones ^^). I'll get to work looking over things then, so stay tuned :D

That's Blessed, in a nutshell (there's more to it, but we don't need more preset ranks for board access IMO). I think that giving people a post goal to aim for isn't a bad idea.. After all, Social posts count too, 250 posts can easily be made in a week or two of activity.

Coming from Lin (I agree myself), Tim is angry because he is losing people. She said that bringing ludicolm into ppn serves as a threat to ppn as well as saying it sucks so move to this site. Knowing this in your position, wouldnt you feel obligated yourself to be mad when your site is being degraded? Then there you go.

Sounds plausible. Although I never said "PPN sucks" in public on that site, I just said "You all have a choice". But I can see what you mean. I just feel that he's overreacted to a signature change (which was forced by his new filter, otherwise I would have imbedded the link in the image and left it at that). So I think it's fair to say that he has his reasons and I have mine. I'll respect his... But I do not agree with them. ^^

Yeah. I think Timothy kind of brought this on his own head, by not acting sooner and taking the measures necessary to keep the site in a maintained condition. Yo I had an idea for the forum.  I got the idea from Pokécommunity Forums which also does this.  They prevent a person from being able to post a link until they reach 15 posts.  This would be cool for L-com since if a spambot came on and started posting links to things like viagra, the post would not work and thus prevent the spambot from succeeding in its task of making a n00by spam topic.  Any thoughts the peers of l-com?

I'm unsure if I can, but it does seem like an interesting idea. I think we're relatively safe for now, as all accounts need to be approved by an admin, so obvious spambots won't even get their account activated. So this should give me some time to look into this, and maybe find a better way to incorporate the idea.

Interesting, but I have no clue where to input these codes (where the Headers and Footers mentioned are, etc), and they don't allow you guys to transfer money between one another, which means that for every transaction, I'd need to go into the admin panel and edit money amounts (and only subtraction without editing post counts is mentioned, not adding). I'll look into it more later, but it's not a priority at the moment (affiliation is, but I've been too busy with school lately to do anything with that even... Summer's coming though).

ok ^_^
maybe in teh future something cool could be done, maybe move the smf database to another host which allows the currency add on.  but yeah affiliation is cool :D

Currency is nice, but I feel if one day we should have it here we should start fresh, with a new system perhaps.

if we get it, we should get the money equal to our post count (or post count+topic count).  I recommend Ludicash as a name xD (or Ludicurrency, but ludicash is probs better)

The currency name, should we get it, is probably going to be Ludicoins, LC for short. I'll probably institute some sort of conversion rate for how many LC a post would generate. Not really much of an issue yet, we've got time to mull it over.

Currency will most likely come along when I get the site it's own domain name. I need to look into pricing for this kind of stuff, too... Because I'm not really willing to spend "hundreds of dollars a month" as TimF says it takes to run PPN (I'm not rich- I'm a cheapskate when it comes to money, since I'm gonna be moving to my own place around the same time I could afford to do anything for the site). So obviously I would rather spend the money to get out of my parents house xD But eventually... I don't think I'd be willing to spend over $50 a month, max, on the site as it is, if I get a better job maybe more.... It's not that I don't love you guys (I do!), but I gotta shop around before I promise anything to you all. You know?

Ah, I'm rambling D: You've all heard my speech before xP

coolness, my idea was LC for short too, but yeah I'm happy with anything :D

It's not the domain that does it, it's the host.  There are free hosts available but the paid ones are generally better.  My old forum spiriteam runs on a free host that isnt smfforfree and thus allows currency properly. But yeah we all understand that you cant spend moneys atm ^^

Hmmm.... o-o

So is this website like a listing of websites and ratings of said websites? Interesting. I'm glad whoever rated us thought we were good, though. :D

Although I wouldn't exactly call us child safe xP SFW, yes. Teen safe, yes. But iono if younger kids should be on here. It's not awful bad, but we aren't great in that category (site wasn't made for young kids anyways).

But I'm curious too... Who rated us? :D

I know.
You can get the WoT (Web of Trust) plug-in on most browsers.
I use it. Just yesterday, the icon was yellow on a website where I wanted to buy.
I looked the ratings up and it was like Vendor Reliability: 45. XD
So I gave up.

yo guys if people are interested, I would be willing to set up a Create a Pokémon thing similiar to Smogon's one :D  it's a group project of making a pokemon.  Though people would need to be consistent with being part of it in order to get one finished.  So that's why I'm mentioning it here, will people be active with this or not?  Because it would be cool to work together to make a mon :)
we'd need artists and spriters btw

It appears this is like a general site discussion thread.

Anyways the Error you cannot view the staff list thing has been back for a while, it was fixed a while ago but it seems to be a problem again.  We can live with it of course, but thought I'd mention it :)

Currently changed the signs as a test: new topics are now indicated by SHINY waving, no new topics by a shiny Lotad, and new topics in a child board are indicated by a shiny Lombre.

However the images are a tad big, considering changing them. Input?

They're a tad big indeed.
The page length almost doubled. XD
Maybe have the tiny sprites instead? Like in the legend at the bottom.

i like them, and its so nice having an update that has a bug, have the bug fixed right away,
im used to on one game i play, announce an update, month or two later put it on test server, people find bugs, they push back update to "fix" bugs, release update with even more bugs than it had before it was tested including half of them being ones that were noted when it was tested, and then having to wait to see if they even care enough to fix them until half a year later when the next update happens, and they only fix it if 70% of the people who play on all servers complain, and even then only if they want to fix it
if you know what game im talking about you get a cookie

The Pokeballs were a lot easier to see; you could tell straight away if a board has new posts or not.
This new one is not so obvious, especially since Lotads and Lombres dont look too much different
It makes it a bit harder to see whats what.

They dance/circle around. Your browser may not process that though and just show one frame (the backwards one).

I changed it so that only new posts have moving icons (new child board posts have a walking Lombre, while new main board posts have a dancing Ludicolo, and no new posts is a Lotad sitting still). Is that any better? :3

If I develop any flash games would you be able to put them in the arcade here? I can also make it so that it records scores.
Can make some Pokemon related too :P.
Well I'm not sure how much freedom smfforfree gives you when it comes to managing files; can you access the SMF source files an edit them btw?

If not then can you install/upload your own packages?

Yeah, I don't think they can. Must be a list of games included in smfforfree with no freedom.

Title: Re: Improve the Site- What Is Most Pressing?

Indeed, just tested a test account and can't barely do anything at all :/
Not even the option to upload games to SMF Arcade -.-

Edit: Just was looking back a few pages and wanted to bring a few things up...
As far as I can tell you can't even export the forum tables to a file, so let's say you get a domain name and a host. You won't be able to move all the current settings from this forum including posts/members because smfforfree won't allow you to do that. (I don't know if you could contact customer support or w/e and solve that though)

Well that's the cheapest option out of the question unless you want to start a fresh.
The other option is to buy through the roof for the crappy services that smfforefree provide. Seriously you can get a host/domain for cheaper than what they offer (250mb of storage?! lolwtfextortionists)
It's funny how they take all these open source addons and then charge you insane fee's to use them on here, sure it's legal but really...

The Staff List isn't accessible. It's there but only because Kloud doesn't know how to remove it from the link bar.
