Title: Competitive Battling Quick Questions Thread
Post by: loom on March 17, 2011, 09:47:11 pm
Use this thread for posting simple and fast questions regarding Competitive Battling.

Sample Questions suitable for this topic:

a. How does ______ learn _______?
b. What does this item/move do?
c. Is this moveset ok?
d. What ev spread should I give ________?

Sometimes people might want to ask small metagame questions about their team, their pokemon, or something simple and then people come to help.  So this is the quick question thread, where people can post some competative battling questions which other people can answer in this topic :D

eg:

person 1- What nature do you think would be best for my Aerodactyl lead? Jolly or Adamant as it attacks?
person 2- Jolly is best because it needs to go fast as it leads and needs to Taunt and Stealth Rock to set up and stop your opponent setting up, quickly.

This thread is not for detailed questions, they deserve to be in a different topic.  This thread is for quick questions like the above example.  Don't clutter the topic with bigger things.

I'm waiting for the board to be made before I share ideas, but yea that looks like a standard set, although being standard can be bad this gen given the team preview, so its time to get creative xD

Ok, Good Luck! The other moves are viable, I just like him as an all-out attacker.

Yup, its speed and attack are quiet decent.

When we do get a Competitive Battling board, I was thinking we could revive the custom tiers and analyses idea here on Ludicom, so that we stay a step ahead and think more out of the box, compared to everyone following Smogon's standard sets.

Thoughts?

I'd love it.
I'd help to the best of my abilities.
Brian from PPN would probably join too. I actually talked about it to him. You may have seen that.

Really? *goes to check* Interesting, when we do begin the project it would be great if he could assist as well.

Mostly everyone on Ludicom is pretty experienced with comp battling, or have explored it at some point through gen 4, so everyone's input now would be great.

It was on the ToT.

It was on the ToT.

Anyone know what happened to that kid who dissed on everyone (especially me) and [extremesarcasm]"left"[/extremesarcasm] the forums?

Jolt/Minato Namikaze, I see him on MSN frequently, should actually catch up one of these days, I don't know exactly what he's up to though, but he cut off from PPN a long time ago.

I'll have to try when I get a full team.
Right now, I only have an awesome Volcarona I got from Justin. :D

 ;)

I may make myself a Ferrothorn. Its ability is kickass. Just gotta watch for Fire-type moves.
Switching him in a physical attack deals 1/8 HP to the foe and seeing his typing/resistance/defense, it makes for one helluva Pokemon. ;D

I have one xD

XD

If Ferrothorn ever gets a Rock-type move from Dream World or event though...
It only has Rollout which isn't a good choice for it I guess.
Ferrothorn packing an HP Rock or Fire wouldn't really matter since it lacks in SpA. Could still help. It would be the best option I guess.

Use him best for his assets, his defenses, a Curse set does wonders (max hp/spdef), but he works great as a supporter. Trick Room is going to be very strong this gen, I have several new team members already, like the solosis evo.

Lol yeah.
OH NOZ IT'S DRIZZLE AND SWIFT SWIM!
There's like the same or near the same alternatives with other weathers.
AND, Rain doesn't hurt over time. -_-

Water types and Swift Swim sweepers have great versatality, I'll give them that, look at mixed kingra in 4th Gen's OU, that thing is a monster under rain, will perma-rain further expand this OPness, in a way yes, but the other weathers got advancements too, and used by a smart battler can be just as OP, rain is banned because it's simple to use to sweep, anyone can do it.

It would. :DDD
Seriously though, Smogon needs to f***ing die. I'd rather follow confusing, daily-changing Japanese Tiers than this crap.

I would not go that far, but the idea we have would be great.

Power Whip / Gyro Ball / Poison Jab

Careful
252 HP/4 Def/252 SpDef
- Curse
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball

Great TR sweeper, astounded by his defensive capabilities, barring fire, fire counter is necessary, I use Big Root as an item.

Don't use Poison Jab, bad coverage

Have an UT copy with Spikes for a support set I will eventually make.

I agree with Jcb Poison Jab is bad coverage. In fact all poison based attacks have bad coverage, it is only super effective against Grass...

Hum, I'd like to maybe request something?
I mean, I heard that it was fine to use the DW abilities as long as they had been at least released in Japan. Right?
So, it would be nice to have a guide for this.
Or just a link to an updated list in the sticky topic.

Thanks.

That's a good idea because I find it quite hard to keep track of these myself, Aryeh actually knows more about this since I actually ask him sometimes on this subject.

I'll look to see if there's a list somewhere on smogon now, or serebii and update the OP.

Yes the DW abilities from Japan are allowed to be used as they have been released and exist legally in the world.  It's the same as how for example the Flare Blitz Entei was allowed to be used when it released in Japan even before it was released everywhere else.  It's real so it's allowed, the same goes for released Dream World mons such as Drought Vulpix and such, though remember to be careful with legalities such Speed Boost Blaziken cant be female which opens a can of worms leading it to not legally learn Baton Pass.

Also I guess since we have a Comp Board now, this can be used as the Quick Question thread which is nice =D
maybe put a little FAQ on the first post too

Why is being a female forbidding it from learning Baton Pass? :o

The only legality I really know is the Drizzle + Swift Swim. XD

No It cant be Female, Because it is Male, the only way to breed a Baby Torchic is with a Ditto, however Ditto does not let Egg Moves or Dream World abilities be passed down to the baby.  Thus, as Speed Boost is an Egg Move, the Speed Boost Blaziken cant have Baton Pass, thus letting down lots of fans.  Basically the event Dream World mons (like the Croagunk Event too) had set male genders to keep them rare =/

Is a Work Up set viable & effective on Infernape?

Also, need a bit of advice on this set:

Cinccino Jolly Technician
Standard EV's
~ Wake-Up-Slap
~ Bullet Seed/Rock Blast
~ U-Turn
~ Return/Tail Slap

Which is better, Return or Tail Slap? Smae for Bullet Seed or Rock Blast?

Actually there is somthing far better than Blaziken or Infernape but I have a fear if telling you guys this it will get uber.

If one move is done sussesfully one time it will rape a team unless the team has priority effective moves, focus sash or be speed scarffed over 300.

Infernape is faster than Darmanitan, however he does have interesting use being banded.

Heatran is still as viable as in Gen 4, I like it, only thging is no explosion.

Didn't think of that at the time. I saw people say Skarmory was a good wall, but to me I just think it can be KO'd to easily with Skarmory. I was gonna try and get a mixed wall but people only recommended two pokemon, and I don't remember what they were.

Carninkle is pretty good even though it lacks offensive capacity to much of a degree. Still, a wall that can set up both shields is pretty damn good. But personally, I'd say just take your Dusknoir setup, and bring it back to a Dusclops with Eviolite. Probably the best mixed wall in the game.

I guess OU tier? I'm just tired of being beaten by people with super competitive pokemon and I have to use the team I beat the Pokemon League with.

Right now for my competitive team I have:

Donphan (Sturdy)With Stealth Rock, Ice Shards, Earthquake and Body Slam
Ninetales (Drought) With Solar Beam, Hypnosis, Heat Wave and Flamethrower
Metagross (Clear Body) with Meteor Mash, Earthquake, Ice Punch and explosion
Dusknoir (Pressure) Holding Leftovers with Will-O-Wisp, Pain Split, Fire Punch and Earthquake
Espeon (Magic Bounce) With Psychic, Signal Beam, Calm Mind and Shadow Ball
Yanmega, he's a temporary 6th (Speed Boost) with Air Slash, Bug Buzz, U-Turn and Double Team.

Pretty sure double team is banned in competitive battles because it's a bullshit move that should be removed from the game.

As I said, he's temporary. Plus, that's if you go by Smogon. If I get challenged by a random passerby with a team of legends, you can be damn sure I'm gonna use Double Team so I'm invincible.

yeah it's super unfair to use evasion moves.  I wouldn't battle somebody who uses those.

Yeah Double Team is a banned move...

Donphan pretty much functions as a physical wall there, and with Metagross as well I don't really think that you're short of physically bulky Pokémon :P

I would suggest removing Dusknoir, Yanmega and Ninetales though. The sun doesn't really support your team whatsoever, so if you want to use it I'd redesign the team to take more advantage of the sun although weather in general isn't as effective this generation.

I spent two hours battling the water gym leader in emerald cuz his kingdra would spam double team, and i had nothing that could damage it, so I taught my sealio double team and had to wait for it to run out of PP and struggle itself to death.

I despise double team with a passion.

I assume you mean gen 6, but I'm still tooling with it given the mega.

Though a good for gen V would be Outrage, Fire Fang, Aqua Tail, Earthquake.

I assume you mean gen 6, but I'm still tooling with it given the mega.

Though a good for gen V would be Outrage, Fire Fang, Aqua Tail, Earthquake.

Someone recommended this for a Gen 6:

Garchomp @Garchompite
192 HP/152 Atk/164 Speed
Ability: Rough skin
Hasty/Naive nature
- Substitute
- Dragon Claw/Outrage
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast/Stone Edge/Poison Jab

Unless you're running a bulky chomp then it's mega sucks imo. Some other sets:

Choice Scarf
Garchomp @Choice Scarf
4HP/252Atk/252Spe
Ability: Rough Skin
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Fire Blast

Choice Band
Garchomp @Choice Band
4HP/252Atk/252Spe
Ability: Rough Skin
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Claw/Outrage
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Fire Fang

Support
Garchomp @Leftovers/Rocky Helmet
252HP/196Def/60Spe
Ability: Rough Skin
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Dragon Claw/Dragon Tail
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast/Aqua Tail (Aqua Tail in the rain, although it is much less effective this gen than last)

Swords Dance
Garchomp @Lum Berry/Yache Berry/Leftovers
4HP/252Atk/252Spe
Ability: Rough Skin
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Claw/Outrage
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge/Substitute
- Swords Dance

For the SD set you could probably make it a bit bulkier if you wanted, but then it's mega might be more useful. It is better though if you want to dodge status with a Lum Berry or retain the speed needed to sweep.

You may also want to use Sand Veil if you are running a Tyranitar or Hippowdon on the same team as the free turns can be very useful at times, especially to set up SD's and Subs.

Edit: You may also want to consider Iron Head or Poison Jab with all of these fairies running amuck.

Okay, so another question. I have a Shiny 5iv Gale Wing Fletchling. What moves/evs should I go for.

Brave Bird is a Must have. The Priority High Power Punch is incomparable.

I'd also say Roost and Flare Blitz (I think they get that one)

Round that out with some other Physical Move.

For moves go for...

Brave Bird/Acrobatics
Flare Blitz
Swords Dance/Bulk Up/U-turn (depending on what you need it for)
Roost

Brave Bird/Flare Blitz are the obvious STABs and priority, but I have seen some sets use Acrobatics. Personally I prefer Brave Bird as it allows Talonflame to hold an item. Some people prefer Aerobatics due to having no recoil, but to do any significant damage you cannot have any held item such as Leftovers or Life Orb. Leftovers actually helps to increase Talonflame's survivability, making Brave Bird more viable. Roost obviously is used for additional healing and lets Talonflame heal up Stealth Rock damage. Swords Dance and Bulk Up are completely up to you, Swords Dance has more immediate power but Bulk Up makes Talonflame harder to kill. U-turn is for Choice Band sets that will not set up because it gives you momentum and eases prediction.

For EVs definitely use 252Atk since it doesn't have the greatest base attack, but the HP and speed can be variable. Personally I use 88HP/168Spe in order to outspeed base 100 pokes (putting Talonflame at 330 Speed) so you don't have to rely on priority against them. The rest goes into HP to increase it's already short life. I know other sets use more HP and less speed due to the Gale Wings priority, but I like having the option to hit base 100s with Flare Blitz as well as Brave Bird reliably.

See, I have a question about the evs. I use the Super Training to EV train my pokemon, and there's no way to tell if I reached a certain number in the stat. So how would I know if I reached 168 Speed?

Check the Pokemon. The EVs started being applied immediatly in gen 4 or 5. So you can just check the stat on the Pokemon itself

So on the top screen where it shows the Stats and the numbers those are actually the evs?

No, Those are the stats after the EV aplication. And only the ones on the Pokemon's status screen is what I'm talking about.

The points of stats shown when Super Training are actually EVs.

Get a counter, or see if theres one online, and just add 1 every time you add an EV.

This is why EV training was so easy in D/P/Pt, the bottom screen had a counter app to easily keep track of your progress.

That's really not necessary. Super Train shows how many EVs your getting, and you can always look at your Pokemon's actual stats and the EVs will already have been applied, it's a moot point.

Best way to do it is to do the 252atk first, because it will stop you adding more when you reach that amount. Then buy 8 HP ups and use them to get 80 HP EVs, then do the next 8 via super training. After this just keep doing speed until it stops you, then you know you have the correct amount.

A Gen 6 only mechanic that allows the quick and efficient means of EV training.
Ultimately getting rid of prior methods of doing so :V

it didn't get rid of prior methods, you can still EV train normally with all the existing methods, this is just a new method in addition to it

Well yeah, but who is going to use the other methods when you have Super Training from about the get go?

The horde method is faster
and repeatedly wacking the stylus does a number on the wrist eventually so it's good to do another thing xD

Super Training. It's a gen 6 feature that makes EV training not only easy, but doable everywhere.

Never happened. I'd be fine with making a tourny now though.

Yeah I'd definitely join. The only problem is getting enough people, and once people join they'll have to actually turn up.
