Every ten years, there is destruction. Every ten years, the continent of Drameri is ravaged. Every ten years, the earth quakes, and the beast rises from it's lair. A dragon, a terror like man has never known. The last six hundred years have come to be called the "Reign of the Dragon." In the year 2040, the creature now known as the hell dragon rose from the earth of a wasteland in the center of the continent. It began it's flight of death, attacking the cities of man. A band of heroes from the land of Altaer rose up to defeat it, and it was forced back it's lair in the wasteland. Ten years later, it rose again, and the world was once again caught unprepared. It reigned for a year, and the world was almost lost. But then another group of saviors appeared, defeated it once again, and vanished. Ten years later, man was ready.
An elite militia known as the Dragonwatch, practicing an ancient form of power called Word Magic, formed a militant country around the wasteland, and spent ten years preparing. In 2060, when the hell dragon appeared once more, they ambushed it, forcing it to slumber again, but at great cost. Now, this organization fight it almost ritualistically every tenth year, forcing it back each time. So have the years passed, to the present day, 2663. After the last attack, a small group of Word Mages broke off from the Dragonwatch to form a freelance organization of mercenaries, calling themselves the Words of Power after their magic. Their reasons for leaving were various, but they kept their experience dueling the beast with sword and Word, and put these experiences to use in their new occupation. So they operated for three years. Now, theses mercenaries are hired for a difficult job with a promise of excellent pay. But things will not go as planned.

Word Magic:

Word Magic is a magic more ancient than conventional magic. Standard magic uses spells and incantations to perform limited effects. It is crude and difficult to learn, but popular among those without a gift for Word Magic who still wish to be able to manipulate their world.
Word Magic works by a system of powerful Words that control aspects and objects, such as fire or heat, metal, and protection. When a Word is learned and studied by one with the gift, they can unlock it's meaning, and utilize it, granting them limited control over what the Word represents by speaking it. There are three types of Words:
Words of Power: The most basic Words, the ones granted to mortals at the dawn of time.
Words of Shadow: A more advanced form of Word Magic that relies on manipulating the plane of Shadow with memories of past events in Words, and projecting that reality onto the material plane.
Words my Divinity: The Words the gods used to create the world, written in the stars and holding incredible power. With enough study and a mastery of astrology, a Word Mage can read the stars and learn a Divine Word. Divine Words grant almost unlimited control over what they represent, but are very difficult to learn. Only a few Loremasters (master Word Mages) have learned Divine Words in recorded history.

Timeline:
000-1000: Creation of the world, early ages.
1000-1300: The Rising Era. Countries slowly formed on Drameri. Edrephos and Nomaria formed in years 1200 and 1270 respectively. Little more than barbarians living in the mountains or traveling the plains. Actual names at this point unknown.
1450: Stable system of government adopted among Edrephos, Nomarians remain nomads. Earliest known record of the name "Edrephos." The first King of Edrephos was Torrog.
1500: Altaer founded. First Queen of Altaer was Reveria. Natives have strong ties to a supposed goddess of wind and light.
1600: Kuriar founded by breakaways from Edrephos. First Emperor was Ran Honeth I.
1600-2000: Golden age of man.
2040: Sudden rising of the Dragon from uninhabited wasteland in the center of the continent. Edrephans retreat underground to escape. Dragon defeated by a band of Altaerian heroes. It returned to it's lair.
2050: Return of the Dragon. Kuriar devastated. Defeated again by a group of unknowns.
2060: Discovered that the Dragon wakes up every ten years. Dragonwatch and the Watchland formed to meet the latest attack.
2060: Beginning of the Reign of the Dragon.
2663: Present day.

The Continent of Drameri
Drameri is where the RP takes place. It is a large continent just beneath the equator in the world of Matetra. Drameri has few sailors, and so contact with other continents is sparse. It consists of five nations, Altaer, Watchland, Edrephos, Nomaria, and Kuriar, and The Ravaged Lands.

Altaer
Altaer is a mountain country, north of Watchland. Despite isolation, Altaer is the most civilized country, and has several towns around the border to Watchland, Nomaria, and Kuriar. It has strong trade relations with every nation except Edrephos, and maintains a massive international highway. Contrary to this, however, is the number of mountain villages that are so isloated they don't know the name of their own king. The current king of Altaer is Mekath, a scholar who is interested equally in books and trade. Altaer's Capital is Altaer's Light, the Silver City.
Altaerins are fair skinned and dark haired, usually. They're eyes range from brown to gray. They have strong builds, the result of their mountain homes, and often dress in furs, since it's rather cold high in the Altaer range.

Edrephos
Edrephos is another mountain country, in the south, but instead of living at the peaks, it's people live underground. They engage in almost no trade with other peoples, though legend has it that Edrephans make incredibly fine jewelry, weapons, and armor, with the bounty of ores from there mines. The current King of Edrephos is Eramos, a noble king that has cracked down on crime in the kingdom. The Capital of Edrephos is Edrephosia, a city deep under a gigantic mountain that practically lives on the mining industry.
Edrephans are dark skinned and dark haired, and short but stocky. They favor having long beards. They are athletic and strong, because many of them work in mines.

Nomaria
Nomaria is a nation of nomads, horsemen who wander the plains, leading cattle and selling the best horses on the continent to other countries. They have no cities and no universal king.
Nomarians are fair skinned and haired, with dark eyes. They are athletic, lithe, and tall.

Kuriar
Kuriar is the eastern empire, with the most millitary might in Drameri. It has often warred with other countries, but lately has been mostly at peace. Slavery is common among Kuriar, where it is outlawed in Altaer, and Watchland, and virtually unknown in Nomaria and Edrephos. The current members of the General Staff are corrupt, malicious men who want nothing more than to conquer Drameri.  The current Emperor is Ran Honeth VII, a man of questionable reputation, but ultimately harmless. The capital is Kur Honeth, known as the City of Marble.
Kurians are shortish, with dark hair and tanned skin. The soldiers are always in top physical condition, while the merchants, who do little work, not really.

Watchland
Watchland is the militant nation around the Ravaged Lands. It is mostly occupied by soldiers who patrol in the area. It's capital is Dragonwatch Keep, the final bastion of defense against the dragon.
Watchlanders are of sort of a mixed race, and physical traits vary wildly.

The Ravaged Lands
The Ravaged Lands is the area around the Dragon's Den. The place is totally destroyed by the repeated attacks. Rivers have dried up, and what little water there is is stagnant, there is almost no plant life, and hardly anything living. It is an unnaturally quiet place, a barren wasteland of rock and sand.

Accepted Characters:

Vansalon:

Name: Arelyth Kaer
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Nation: Altaer
Appearance: Arelyth is a couple inches shorter than average, with a lithe, petite frame. She has long blond hair and gray eyes. She usually wears a plain, serviceable blue dress and silver earrings shaped like flying birds. Though not usually seen, she has a long white scar across her back, a result of her battle with the Dragon with the rest of the Dragonwatch.
Personality: Arelyth is organized to the extreme, keeping her office in the Words of Power's headquarters perpetually clean and orderly. She's upbeat and cheery, but easily crushed and quickly becomes a pessimist in hard situations. She disdains combat, preferring to crunch the numbers for the group. She's timid around strangers but generally friendly as soon as she's established the person as the same. She has extreme haphephobia, fear of being touched.
Backstory: Arelyth was born to a wealthy Altaerian merchant family. Her father was a violent criminal who repeatedly bribed his way out of receiving penalties for angry assault of people he disliked. He wasn't a good parent, beating his daughter whenever he returned home angry. This caused Arelyth to grow up to be skittish and haphephobic. One day, her father was assassinated by a hitman hired by the mother of a boy he almost beat to death. This changed Arelyth's life significantly, as her mother began teaching her the family business and at sixteen she ran the shop under her mother's guidance. But soon after, her mother died of disease, and the girl was forced to turn to the most available source of a living: The then recruiting Dragonwatch. She learned to fight and cast Words there. She turned out to be very talented at Word Magic, but only in certain areas. Words relating to violence were mostly out of her reach, so she learned magic to aid stealth. At nineteen, she fought the Dragon when it awoke. While she was at the very back of the lines, she still ended up fighting the beast face to face, and almost died. It saw through her enchantments and swatted her with it's claw. She landed against the wall of the Keep, a bloody gash across her back, her armor shredded, unconscious. She was barely still alive when the remaining soldiers searched the battlefield afterwards for survivors, and the Dragonwatch's healers revived her when she was in minutes of being lost. Three years later, when Eli proposed splintering from the Watch, she readily agreed and went with him as one of the founding members of the Words of Power, for which she now serves as something of an accountant and treasurer for, keepign track of funds and dealing with clients.
Words Known: Cleos (Clean/Organize), Quiel (Quiet), Vansith (Veil/Hide), Losith (Open).
Other Notes:

Name: Eli Larynth
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Nation: Kuriar
Appearance: Eli is tall, with an athletic build. He has formerly close cropped blond hair that he has let grow out some since leaving the Dragonwatch. His eyes are a deep green. He wears the plainest of white outfits outside combat, and gleaming chainmail for battle. He has a long, ugly, red scar along his right arm, bestowed by a shard of a boulder the dragon destroyed while he fought it.
Personality: Eli is headstrong and a born leader. He's naturally rebellious, tending to ignore authority figures and make his own rules. He's charismatic and kind, and while he has a tendency to rush into a fight if he's angered, an excellent strategist. He considers himself a righteous man, and makes it his duty to persecute evil.
Backstory: Eli was born to a former slave in Kuriar. His family was very poor, his father was barely putting food on the table by working as a bodyguard to nobles. As soon as he came of age, Eli demanded training in the sword from his father, and after much badgering, convinced him. He turned out to be a prodigy swordsman, and at nineteen he accompanied his father guarding a noble's trip to another city. When the caravan was attacked by bandits, however, Eli's skill didn't hold up so well in the field. He crumpled under pressure, and only his father's presence kept him alive. After that, the shaken boy dropped orthodoxical swordsmanship for showsmanship, using his blade for acrobatic feats and the like. Startlingly, he ended up amazingly popular in Kur Honeth, and he single handedly pulled his family out of poverty with the revenue. So his life went for two years, until he decided that entertaining petty nobles wasn't enough, that he actually wanted to make a difference in the world. To this end, he joined the Dragonwatch and learned word magic, as well as taking up bladeswork again, recovering his old skills and keeping them sharp until the Dragon attacked when he was 26. Eli fought it on the front line, the first of the forts around it's lair. After the battle, he felt too tied to the much reduced Dragonwatch, and gathered a group of friends and left to form the Words of Power.
Words Known: Iesa (Light/blind), Sedros (Sword), Sovarii (Fire/Heat), Petross (Protect), Telketh (Move).
Other Notes:

Kloud:

Name: Yashy Kimaugh
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Nation: Nomaria
Appearance: True to her people, she's lithe and tall with pale skin. However, she's not super athletic, having softer curves. Her eyes are deep blue and she had honey colored hair. She wears a patterned poncho over a plain tan shirt with army green loose pants and leather boots. She has a satchel that has an insane amount of carrying capacity, again a nod to her heritage.
Personality: She's very worldly, as she's seen a lot. She doesn't say much, though when she does, she tends to be a snarker. She's usually pleasant, provided you haven't given her a reason to act otherwise. She favors light weapons that, while they may not do much in a single hit, can hit repeatedly, very quickly.
Backstory: Not much is known about her history, other than that she is a wanderer who happened to settle with the mercenary group when she arrived in the area. She doesn't talk about it much.
Words Known: Sovarii (Fire/heat), Rasi (Speed), Imperos (Calm), Cyro (Ice/cold).
Other Notes:

Kinfin:

Name: Narroth Van Sheagoth (Pronounced NARE-oth Van SHE-goth)
Gender: Male
Age: Huh?
Nation: Kuriar
Appearance: Narroth is constantly clad in a black robes ordained in decorations resembling skulls and bones. His hair is black with blonde tips, and his eyes lack any colour besides pitch black.
Personality: Obsessed with death, but not a murderer. Narroth considers death facinating. He loves nothing more than studying a corpse and learning all it's secrets. He feels most at home in graveyards and crypts.
Backstory: Narroth wasn't always as obsessed with death as he is. His obsession was born when he was locked inside a crypt in an attempt by his family enemies to murder him and steal his assets. He was trapped for three week. During that time, he studied the corpses in their graves, and noticed pasterns. In the week, he became an expert at autopsies. He also learned words from books buried with the bodies, and using his time, honed them until he was consistent enough. He was forced to live off the meat of the rats and bats in the crypt until his skill grew enough to escape the crypt. This experience, however, changed him. He killed his assassins, and then began to roam, studying any dead body he found. He forgot his age, his old life, whom he once was. He was changed forever.
Words Known: Telketh (Move), Staise (Keep), Cryo (Ice/Cold), Vriss (Cut)
Other Notes: Narroth carried a small coffin on his back filled with enough bones to form an entire skeleton.

This turned out rather long, so if you want a synopsis, pm me or ask on skype.
